6 Weeks Before the Move

Declutter and audit: Go through room-by-room. Donate, sell, or discard items you do not want to carry to your new home.
Request removal quotes: Contact 3 professional removal firms or look into van hire options if you are doing a DIY move.
Create a moving folder: Keep all paper records, contracts, contacts, and legal letters in one secure binder.
Notify landlord (if renting): Submit formal written notice according to your tenancy agreement notice period (usually 30 to 60 days).
School registration: Contact your children's current school to request record transfers, and register them with their new local schools.

4 Weeks Before the Move

Confirm and book removals: Once contract exchange is completed and a moving date is set, finalize your removal booking.
Order packing supplies: Gather boxes, heavy-duty tape, bubble wrap, and markers for labeling.
Arrange home insurance: Get quotes and make sure your new building insurance is active from the date of exchange.
Book annual leave: Request time off work for moving day and the days surrounding it to ensure you have enough time.
Arrange removal parking: Contact the local council to arrange a parking suspension or permit for the removal truck at both addresses if required.

2 Weeks Before the Move

Pack non-essentials: Start wrapping out-of-season clothes, books, ornamental items, and spare bedding.
Redirect mail: Set up a mail forwarding redirect with Royal Mail to catch any correspondence.
Notify utilities and services: Let broadband, electricity, water, gas, and TV providers know your move-out date.
Clear out-of-sight storage: Empty the loft, attic, crawlspaces, garden shed, garage, or greenhouse.
Broadband activation: Book internet activation for your new home. Setups can take 2+ weeks to schedule.

1 Week Before the Move

Pack an 'Essentials Box': Include kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, toiletries, charger cords, basic tools, and immediate paperwork.
Defrost freezer: Clean out and defrost fridge and freezer drawers so they can be transported dry.
Confirm key exchange: Confirm time and location for collecting keys from the estate agent.
Pet and child care: Arrange childcare or pet boarding/sitting for moving day to keep them safe and lower stress.
Secure valuables & docs: Keep passports, jewelry, laptop chargers, and legal docs with you in your car (do not load into removal trucks).

Moving Day

Take meter readings: Photograph gas, electricity, and water meters at both properties to resolve final bills.
Final walkthrough: Walk through every room, cupboard, and attic space. Shut all windows and lock up.
Make the beds first: As soon as you arrive, unpack and set up the beds so you have a place to sleep when exhausted.
Locate utility shut-offs: Find and label the main water stopcock, gas shut-off valve, and electrical consumer unit immediately.
Change new locks: Arrange for a locksmith to replace the main entrance locks on day one for complete home security.

After the Move

Register local GP and dentist: Do this early so you are registered before you require medical assistance.
Update Council Tax: Notify your local council of the move to set up tax brackets.
Update driving licence: Update your details with the DVLA, banks, insurance, and HMRC.
Update default shipping addresses: Remove old addresses on Amazon, grocery apps, eBay, PayPal, Apple Pay, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is paid on property purchases in England and Northern Ireland. From 1 April 2025, home movers pay 0% up to £125,000, 2% on the portion from £125,001 to £250,000, 5% to £925,000, 10% to £1.5 million and 12% above that. First-time buyers pay 0% up to £300,000 and 5% from £300,001 to £500,000; above £500,000 the relief does not apply. Buying an additional property (such as a second home or buy-to-let) adds 5% to every band, and buyers who are not UK resident pay a further 2%. Scotland (LBTT) and Wales (LTT) have their own taxes, which this calculator does not cover.

Estate agents typically charge a commission based on a percentage of the property's final sale price (typically 1.0% to 2.5% + VAT). Our calculator estimates this fee automatically based on your expected sale price and percentage rate.

Conveyancers are solicitors who handle the legal transfer of property ownership. They check ownership papers, conduct local authority searches, manage the transfer of funds on completion, and register your ownership with the Land Registry.

Renting a van (DIY) is cheaper, costing between £50 and £150 per day plus fuel. However, professional removal firms provide packing services, moving trucks, and insurance cover for your belongings, which significantly reduces the stress of moving day. The choice depends on your budget and volume of furniture.
